About the book

Big Data is a topic that has been on the agenda and in evidence currently, due to the large volumes of data that are generated daily. Management based on immense masses of data is consolidated in several sectors, such as Tourism, providing effective and strategic management with better results. In this way, Big Data is a topic that arouses interest, curiosity and even many questions.

In order to contribute to this debate, LETS launches the book Big Data in Tourism: concepts and applications, Written by Rayane Ruas. The LETS researcher currently resides in Portugal, where she is developing her doctorate at the University of Aveiro. The book is born from her research as a doctoral student and her professional performance as a consultant in the area.

The work addresses the definition and characteristics of Big Data, as well as its stages and requirements to be implemented. It presents how Big Data connects with tourism and sustainability, presenting practical examples of its application. At the end, the book presents a proposal of steps for those who want to implement Big Data management in the Tourism sector.

The book launch event will bring together researchers and professors from Brazil and Portugal. In Brazil, UnB will be represented by the coordinators and founders of the LETS research group, as well as guest professors from several other universities that make up the group. From the University of Aveiro, we will have Professor Carlos Costa, director of the Department of Economics, Management, Industrial Engineering and Tourism (DEGEIT). From the University of Porto, Professor Belém Barbosa, a specialist in digital marketing, who contributed to the Opening of the Book, will be present.

About the author

Rayane Ruas is a PhD student in Tourism at the University of Aveiro, where she researches the use of technologies and Big Data in tourism. She is a researcher at the Laboratory of Studies in Tourism and Sustainability linked to the Center for Sustainable Development of the University of Brasília (LETS/UnB). She is also the Founder of SPRINT Dados, a consultancy specializing in data management in tourism. It has in its portfolio solutions ranging from optimization and automation of data collection and structuring processes, to the selection and purchase of Big Data, adding analysis, interpretation and application services in the tourism sector.


She holds a Master's degree in Tourism from the Center of Excellence in Tourism at the University of Brasília (CET/UnB), an MBA in Project Management and Digital Marketing from AVM Educacional, and a postgraduate degree in Heritage, Culture and Sustainable Tourism Management from the Ortega y Gasset Foundation (Argentina).


With 15 years of experience in tourism, both in the public and private spheres, as well as in the classroom as a teacher, she is a specialist in project development and execution, planning, public policy and data analysis applied to tourism management. Among his greatest skills are the dialogue and transposition between academia and the market.


She worked for 5 years as Director of the Tourism Observatory of the Federal District (DF), where more than 25 surveys were developed, with more than 52 thousand people interviewed, and articulation and integration of data from 12 entities. Among them, partnerships were established with the Brazilian Association of the Hotel Industry of the Federal District (ABIH/DF), the Brazilian Association of Car Rental of the Federal District (ABLA), Brasília *Convention & Visitours Bureau* (BCVB) and also public agencies such as the Department of Finance, the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District (CLDF).


Since 2021, it has been developing Braztoa's intelligence, with the realization of Statistical Yearbooks, Bulletins and surveys for members. In her exercise as a consultant for the reach of Tourism Intelligence, she has worked directly with more than 15 municipalities in Brazil. Currently, he has been working with partners in Latin America and Europe to spread his knowledge and take data management further and further. With out-of-the-box thinking and always with a smile, it bets on the dissemination of knowledge and data-based management in tourism as a tool for the development of the sector.
