How does the war in Ukraine impact world tourism?

We have all been following the developments of the war and seeking to understand its contours and impacts. Many elements show the complexity of the situation and the potential impacts on global geopolitics.

We have read tirelessly, attended open classes, debated the subject. These are stormy times, of immense international tension. And they directly impact tourism, a sector that has been severely affected by the pandemic in the last two years.

The question of how the war in Ukraine impacts world tourism motivated journalist Ana Flávia Castro to contact LETS. We collaborated with the analysis based on the testimony of our researcher Jaqueline Gil, along with the interview with the CDS/UnB doctoral student, Anastasyia Golets.

We realize that there will be many impacts. There are those that are clearer and more immediate, such as the alteration of air routes, as a result of the closures of airspaces that have already been occurring, the Enhancement oil, food and other goods. These effects will occur in a chain. There is also fear, already present and with impacts on tourism, as highlighted by Jaqueline in her contribution to the report.

Anastasiya Golets, a Belarusian tourism specialist and also a doctoral student at the CDS, emphasized in the interview, the climate of instability at airports connected to the European Union and Asia. She also highlights the impact it can have in terms of borders, in view of the expectation for Tighter security controls .

It is clear that the limits of the conflict are still uncertain and that there may be many developments not yet foreseen, considering the proportion it may reach in the distribution of global powers.
