NEW: Big Data Book in Tourism

Big Data is a topic that has been in evidence today, due to the large volumes of data that are generated daily. The analysis of immense masses of data is consolidated in several sectors, such as tourism, providing effective and strategic management with better results. In this way, Big Data is a topic that arouses interest, curiosity and even many questions.

In order to contribute to this debate, LETS launches the book " Big Data in Tourism: concepts and applications" , Written by Rayane Ruas. The LETS researcher currently resides in Portugal, where she is developing her doctorate at the University of Aveiro. The book is born from her research as a doctoral student and her professional performance as a consultant in the area.

Rayane has been linked to UnB since her master's degree, carried out at the Center of Excellence in Tourism at UnB. In addition, the author worked in the public sector of the DF as responsible for the Tourism Observatory, between 2014 and 2018. She is the founder and CEO of SPRINT Dados, a consulting company specializing in data analysis for tourism, where she has served several destinations and entrepreneurs from north to south of Brazil and develops the intelligence area of the Brazilian Association of Travel Operators – BRAZTOA, with the preparation of Statistical Yearbooks and Monitoring Bulletins.

"Big Data in Tourism: concepts and applications" Its target audience is entrepreneurs, managers, students and those curious about the tourism sector. The work aims to make academic knowledge understandable and applicable by the reader. For this reason, it uses accessible language and explains technical terms in a simple way so that there is a better understanding of the subject. The author, Rayane Ruas, explains:

"My purpose as a researcher and consultant is to empower managers, entrepreneurs and society about the opportunities and possibilities generated by Big Data, so that everyone can benefit from it. This book is the materialization of this desire and I hope it demystifies the idea that Big Data is complex, expensive and is only useful for large corporations, because it is exactly the opposite, it can and should be used by everyone, bringing real benefits to the management of companies and destinations!"

The work addresses the definition and characteristics of Big Data, as well as its stages and requirements to be implemented. It presents how Big Data connects with tourism and sustainability, presenting practical examples of its application. At the end, the book presents a proposal of steps for those who want to implement Big Data management in the Tourism sector.

A Profa. Belém Barbosa, from the University of Porto, points out in the opening chapter of the book that:

"This book is a tool for managers in the tourism sector who are curious about the subject and who want to work with Big Data, not knowing where to start. In a digital environment full of opportunities and challenges, and in which the relevance of communication and digital marketing make all the difference to be found and heard, Big Data ultimately allows us to rigorously identify who our ideal customers are and define effective strategies to reach, delight and engage them."
